NESEA Green Building Pro Tour: All-Electric, Urban Infill Project in Ithaca, October 20, 1-5pm, Ithaca
Event Description

Join NESEA for a Pro Tour of Ironworks Ithaca, a new all-electric urban infill project in downtown Ithaca, NY. This recently-completed project will provide more than 120 apartments and 4,800 square feet of retail space while aligning with the city's ambitious goals of decarbonizing buildings by 2030.

During this event, hosted by Taitem Engineering, attendees will learn about the systems and design strategies that the project team employed, including the high performance building envelope to keep loads low, electric cooling and domestic hot water systems, and offsite solar to offset the onsite energy usage. In addition to the technical aspects of this project, the presenting team will share their integrated design approach. Early on in the process, the entire team was assembled, including the owner, a contractor acting as the cost estimator, the architect, all engineers, and the energy consultant and as a result, the team was able to evaluate a number of different cost-reduction strategies for the project while keeping the energy goals front and center.

NESEA will begin the tour with a project overview before breaking into small groups for deep dives with several members of the project team, each speaking about their particular role. After attendees hear from the speaker team, we'll come back together for refreshments and a Q&A.

More About This Project

The building houses 129 apartments, 4,800 square feet of ground-level retail and also contains robust amenity space including a resident lounge, fitness center, green rooftop terrace, and 24 EV charging stations. A number of project features helped to reduce the embodied carbon and global warming potential of the project including: wood framed construction for floors 2 through 5, CO2 based air source heat pump system for domestic hot water, continuous polyiso insulation, and high-density housing considerations, among others.

This project was supported by New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) through the New Construction – Housing program. Click here to learn more about support NYSERDA continues to offer for the new construction or adaptive re-use of multifamily buildings, including projects awarded through the Buildings of Excellence Competition. View the Building of Excellence Competition’s resources page for detailed information about those exceptional projects.
