Free Webinar: Designing and Retrofitting Homes for Wildfire Resilience, July 29, 12 pm ET
Event Description
Wildfire risk is no longer limited to remote or rural areas—and sustainable, high performance homes are not inherently wildfire resilient. This webinar explores how science based wildfire mitigation strategies can be integrated into both new construction and existing homes, with a strong emphasis on defensible space and the buildings exterior envelope.
Drawing on the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety’s (IBHS) research, this session will focus on how homes ignite during wildfires and, more importantly, how practical, achievable design and retrofit decisions can significantly reduce that risk. Participants will learn how vegetation management, site planning, and near home landscaping work together with exterior components —such as roofs, vents, windows, siding, decks, and attachments—to address the leading causes of wildfire losses. The webinar will distinguish where new construction offers advantages for wildfire resilience and where retrofits can meaningfully reduce risk, helping professionals prioritize actions that deliver the greatest impact.
This session translates wildfire research into clear, actionable guidance for green building professionals who want to design, renovate, and advise with wildfire resilience in mind—without sacrificing sustainability goals.
Learning Lessons -
1. Understand the critical importance of defensible space and how it directly impacts the health and safety of individuals living in areas prone to wildfires.
2. Analyze the role of innovative landscape design and building features in enhancing safety measures that can significantly reduce the risk of fire ignition and propagation.
3. Introduce practical, evidence-based strategies focused on vegetation management and site planning to ensure the welfare of communities by minimizing wildfire risks.
4. Articulate the necessity for professionals to integrate wildfire resilience into their work, balancing safety and sustainability to protect homes and their inhabitants.
Note: Even if you cannot attend, please register so we can send you the recording and follow-up article.
