Event Description

Decarbonizing existing buildings is paramount to meeting the State of California’s aggressive climate action goals. While designing new construction buildings to have all-electric systems is becoming mainstream, converting existing buildings and their systems to all-electric designs presents unique challenges to owners, engineers, and architects. The challenges can change based on the building type, its age, the existing system types, and overall condition and efficiency of the building’s enclosure.

SmithGroup’s Stet Sanborn will present a process to approach electrification retrofits with special attention to MEP systems, such as space heating and domestic/service hot water production. This process includes guidance on the following:

• What data to collect to assist a design engineer in their design work.

• How to identify and navigate potential barriers to electrification.

• Which all-electric systems most easily replace existing system types.

• How leveraging heat recovery options can increase efficiency and reduce electrification costs.

• How phasing of retrofit strategies can be leveraged to align capital budgets with electrification goals.

• What system and control strategies can set projects up for success with evolving Utility Grid needs.

• What financial incentives and mechanisms may be available to owners to support electrification work.

The course will also include example case study projects to highlight successful strategies that have been used, as well as how the projects navigated obstacles.
