Every School Can Be a Green School
Event Description

Whether your school is just getting started, already a green champion, or especially if you feel your school has been counted out, join us as we explore a variety of green-schools programs and how they can be leveraged together for even bigger impact. We truly believe every Missouri school can and should "go green."

“Green schools” are schools that advance practices throughout their campuses, curriculum, and school culture that reduce environmental impact, improve health and wellness, and provide place-based education. Schools can see stronger educational outcomes, reduced costs, and increased student and community engagement as a result. Additionally, schools can receive local, state, and national recognition of their accomplishments. There are multiple entry points to becoming a green school, and efforts can begin and expand via any one of a wide range of roles and perspectives - such as students, teachers, administration or facilities staff.

During this session, we’ll focus on two primary entry points:

  • Green Schools Quest, an annual project-based challenge to schools to implement student-driven, no/low-cost sustainability projects with the help of a Green Mentor. Students document and share their impact, and awards are presented at elementary, middle, and high school levels.

  • Missouri Green Schools, a new statewide recognition program which supports schools in taking a systems-based approach to identify and advance green schools practices. Recognition is offered annually for schools reaching emerging, progressing, and advanced levels of achievement. In the state of Missouri, Missouri Green Schools serves as the conduit for the U.S. Department of Education’s Green Ribbon Schools award.

Additionally, we’ll touch upon resources to support schools on their journey, including semi-annual professional development conferences as well as one-on-one support to set goals and track progress and small grant opportunities available to schools that have 60% or more of their students qualifying for free or reduced-priced lunch.
