Event Description

USGBC MA Residential Committee
Dual Building Tour - Concord and Newton!
Saturday, June 4th at 11am - 2 pm

Join green building colleagues for a tour of two residential buildings. The first home is located in Concord and the second one in Newton.

The Concord House

The design of Concord home began in August of 2008. Architects and engineers at BSC developed the drawing set and specifications for the high performance custom home. The house is a Cape Cod style design with 5 bedrooms, 4 full bathrooms, 2 stories plus a finished basement.

The house is designed to achieve an 87% reduction in source energy use when compared to the 2009 Building America Benchmark. This design features high-R walls, roof, and foundation along with a high efficiency mechanical system. Supplementing the high performance enclosure and mechanical system is a 7 kW PV array installed on the south facing roof. This 87% energy use reduction is equal to HERS 18 and a $4,700 annual utility bill savings to the owner.

The Newton House

The Newton home was originally intended to be a high-performance “flip”. Having lived in a succession of poorly-renovated (or poorly-built) homes in Massachusetts, the owner of the property wanted to renovate and sell an old home as an investment, but make the home thoroughly modern, efficient, and functional for contemporary family living while retaining its historical integrity and architectural character. He registered the project and ended up renovating the house to earn LEED Gold certification – and subsequently moved in and lives there still.

The project entailed a gut renovation of the existing home plus the expansion of the footprint, a new garage and a new basement. The features that contributed to the home’s achieving LEED certification include recycling /donating of old material, added insulation, improved air quality, efficient windows, irrigation with water collection system and more!

The tour in Concord will take place from 11:00-12:00pm. We’ll then drive over to tour the second building tour at a Newton Property, which goes from 12:30-1:30.

Special thanks to LDa Architects for leading the tour and to the Residential Green Building Committee for coordinating the event!
