USGBA MA Residential Committee Meeting, September 11
Guest Speaker: Peter Lawrence, Biomimicry New England

The Residential Green Building Committee is focused on improving the housing stock of the Commonwealth by championing green building practices in our communities. Join us on the second Monday of each month to be a part of the movement.

This meeting's guest speaker will be Peter Lawrence, President and Co-founder of Biomimicry New England. He will be presenting on biomimicry and its application to buildings. The presentation will include a discussion about what biomimicry is, some of nature’s rules and how they can be used in creating more sustainable buildings and examples of some bioinspired building products. The session will also explore nature’s lessons on achieving resilience that can be applied to neighborhoods and cities.

The committee’s objectives are to work to raise the awareness of the benefits of residential green building and remodeling and to increase the quantity of projects registering for LEED for Homes. The committee, through education and outreach, will focus on the following:

-Hold across MA, Lunch and LEED, education sessions and tours on topics such as Zero Net Energy, Deep Energy Retrofits and REGREEN
-Help the community understand and implement LEED for Homes and residential green building, remodeling and retrofits
-Ensure that our target markets are aware of available green building tools and resources
-Partner with other Green Building Programs
-Establish a collaborative relationship with a professional and/or community organizations
-Develop case studies and green residential building content for the USGBC MA website

    • Peter is President and Co-founder of Biomimicry New England and a Biomimicry Specialist. BNE is a nonprofit organization dedicated to establishing nature and natural systems as an important resource for education and innovation in New England. Current programs include: biomimicry training for 7th grade science teachers, developing new multidisciplinary biomimicry courses with universities and two biomimicry exhibitions. From 1985 to 2014 Peter was Chairman & Founder of the Corporate Design Foundation, whose mission was to improve the quality of life and the effectiveness of organizations through design. Prior to that he was Director of the Design Management Institute in Boston. He has taught about design at business schools including: Babson, London Business School, Boston University School of Management and UT Austin’s School of Business. He received a degree in economics from Lafayette College and a degree in architecture from Rhode Island School of Design.
