Event Description
Industrial heat pumps are a mature and well-researched process heating technology with over 30 years of proven application. They can efficiently deliver hot water and steam to industrial processes in a variety of configurations. Despite their technical maturity, widespread adoption has been limited by economic factors, low awareness, workforce constraints, and the persistence of fossil fuel infrastructure.

Andrew Hoffmeister
Andrew Hoffmeister is a Senior Research Associate in the Industry Program of the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. He conducts research on industrial decarbonization for ACEEE’s industrial team. His work focuses primarily on the analysis of emerging technologies, such as industrial heat pumps, policy research at the state, federal, and international level, and the study of other prominent decarbonization pathways, including strategic energy management. Prior to working with ACEEE, Andrew was involved in decarbonization analyses, waste management, and hazardous site management with the Earth and Environmental Science Department at Vanderbilt University. He joined ACEEE in 2019. A graduate of Vanderbilt University, Andrew holds a bachelors degree in Earth and Environmental Science.
Ruth Checknoff
Ruth Checknoff is Vice President, Renewable Thermal at David Gardiner and Associates (DGA), where she supports the Renewable Thermal Collaborative (RTC) in accelerating renewable thermal energy deployment to reduce industrial emissions. Ruth leads educational convenings and resource development to increase market transparency and uptake of clean heat solutions, including industrial heat pumps. Before joining DGA and RTC, Ruth led policy development and local community engagement at Last Energy to accelerate deployment of nuclear energy for industrial decarbonization. Ruth earned a Master of Public Policy and a B.A. in Environmental Sciences and Psychology from the University of Virginia.
