Tesla's Gigafactory

As part of its mission to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy through increasingly affordable electric vehicles and energy products, Tesla is working on its Gigafactory. With a planned production rate of 500,000 cars per year by 2018, Tesla would require the entire worldwide supply of lithium-ion batteries. The Gigafactory, which will supply enough batteries to support the projected vehicle demand is a necessity for Tesla. Tesla began construction in June 2014 outside Sparks, Nevada and the factory is being built in phases so that it can begin manufacturing immediately from within the finished sections and continue construction on the rest of the facility. The building is already more than 1.9 million square feet, with a total of 4.9 million square feet of space across several floors, but is only less than 30 percent complete. Once it's finished it will be the biggest building in the world and it will be entirely powered by renewable energy sources with a net zero energy goal. Tesla estimates that the annual battery production capacity will be 35 gigawatt hours (GWh). The Gigafactory will significantly reduce the cost of batteries for Tesla so that they can continue their mission to transition the world to sustainable energy.
