Showing its environmental leadership, California approved Building Energy Standards on May 31st which are 25 and 30 percent more efficient than previous standards for residential and nonresidential construction, respectively.

The California Energy Commission's decision, to take effect on January 1st, 2014, was unanimous. Goals include saving energy consumption and money, while also improving building efficiency and occupant comfort.

The Standards address windows, insulation, lighting, ventilation systems and other features that reduce energy consumption in homes and businesses. Air conditioning inspecting and whole house fans are included for residential buildings, while daylighting and efficient systems and controls are a commercial focus. Solar-ready roofs will be required for all buildings.

The Standards are expected to cost the average homeowner $11 per month, with savings estimated at $27.

California already has in place a "Zero net Energy" requirement for new homes by 2020. These standards help set the on a path to success.
