Event Description

The transportation sector is the largest contributor of GHG emissions in the U.S. (29%) and makes up almost a quarter of global GHG emissions. Personal cars and light trucks are the primary source of carbon emissions from transportation and, along with the urgent risks of climate change, high rates of single-occupant vehicle (SOV) travel negatively impact local air quality, traffic congestion, public health, traffic safety, and affordable access to jobs and daily needs. Every trip begins and ends in a building, so where and what we build matters for managing the impacts of transportation on our environment and creating more equitable, sustainable, and prosperous communities.

Green buildings are located, designed, and operated to maximize occupant's access to active, public, shared, and electric transportation options. This session will review how LEED v4.1 BD+C, ID+C, and O+M helps green building projects identify smart strategies to improve access to sustainable transportation options, reduce vehicle-miles traveled (VMT), and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles (EVs). Expert panelists will share their perspectives on current policy trends, emerging technologies, and best practices for implementing transportation demand management (TDM) and EV charging infrastructure that green building practitioners can start using today.

Learning Objectives

  1. Define sustainable mobility and explain how the LEED BD+C, ID+C, and O+M rating systems prioritize efficient locations, infrastructure, and programs to promote active, shared, and electric transportation options.
  2. Identify strategies that new buildings can implement to achieve LEED credits supporting sustainable mobility, leading to more healthy, prosperous, and equitable communities.
  3. Explore transportation demand management (TDM) and understand how existing building owners, property managers, and tenants can achieve LEED points by promoting sustainable transportation options for building users.
  4. Describe the benefits of transportation electrification and the importance of electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure for removing barriers to the EV transition. Discuss how EV charging stations and EV Ready parking are rewarded in the LEED credit: Electric Vehicles.

This session is pending approval for 1 CE Hour and is LEED Specific: BD+C, ID+C, O+M. Please note, GBCI CE's are only offered for live webinar attendance. Each person wishing to earn CE hours must register individually.
