Webinar: Designing a LEED Campus in the Desert- Part 1 (Upstate Branch) on July 27
Event Description

This one-hour video documentary examines the design challenges for the Health Sciences Education Building in Arizona. Project team members discuss sustainable sites, integrated design process, energy models, copper cladding, and the LEED campus approach.

The desert is a hot and dry climate, and water can be scarce. Modern designers have learned from the indigenous desert people, who often built into cliffs using thermal mass—to moderate indoor living temperatures. Using strategies from ancient times, the project team for The Health Sciences Education Building in Arizona, a $135 million dollar medical school in downtown Phoenix is aiming for LEED Gold Certification. Project team members discuss sustainable sites, the integrated design process, energy models, the benefits of copper cladding, and the LEED campus approach. Ultimately, the documentary explores how a harsh desert climate and community needs inspire and determine building design.

The intended audience for this course includes architects, engineers, contractors, owners, and other design professionals. Course participants will learn how how the selection and development of a building's site can support the health of the surrounding community. In addition, participants will learn to differentiate between various types of energy models and the design parameters they establish in order to optimize energy performance, such as geometric shading and daylight optimization.
