LEED, LEED recertification
Event Description

LEED v4.1 is a comprehensive revision of the rating system including new and existing buildings, recertification, and residential. It has set the strongest technical foundation possible for the organization to move forward and to address critical areas such as responding to climate risk and health and wellness among others. We added GHG reduction as a metric, increased the stringency of the energy standard, and focus on high-impact renewable energy given the current focus on building decarbonization.

In creating LEED v4.1, USGBC made 3 major changes. The first was to make the rating system more accessible while maintaining leadership based on market feedback from LEED v4. The focus on GHG reduction was further strengthened by adding a carbon reduction metric for both new and existing buildings. The second change was to adapt last year to the COVID-19 pandemic with the LEED Safety First pilot credits. The third change was the revise the LEED intents to include language around equity. That update helps to reflect the equity goals inherent in some of the LEED credits that was not fully stated and to show the goals for further introducing equity into LEED.
