Free Webinar: Plug-In Solar 101: Technology, Safety, Policy & Economics, October 21, 12 pm ET
Event Description

Plug-in solar is emerging as a new category of distributed energy in the United States, offering a simpler pathway for households to generate electricity using small photovoltaic systems designed for connection to residential electrical systems without the complexity of a traditional rooftop solar installation.

This introductory webinar will explain how plug-in solar systems work, the major system components and safety features, the emerging role of standards such as UL 3700 and nationally recognized testing laboratory certification, and the rapidly evolving state regulatory landscape. The presenters will examine how states are approaching system-size limits, utility interconnection, permitting, registration, installation, and consumer protections, as well as the economics and resilience benefits of small-scale solar. The course will also place plug-in solar within the broader distributed-energy landscape and explain how requirements change as systems grow from small plug-in devices to whole-home and larger distributed energy systems.

Lessons Learned -

1. Identify the major components and operating principles of residential plug-in solar systems and explain how system sizing, electrical connection, anti-islanding protection, and certified equipment affect occupant health, safety and welfare.

2. Compare emerging U.S. regulatory approaches to plug-in solar—including system-size limits, permitting and interconnection requirements, utility registration, and NRTL/UL 3700 certification—and explain how these requirements address health, safety and welfare.

3. Evaluate a basic residential plug-in solar installation based on electrical loads, system placement, expected solar production, utility rates, and resilience needs while identifying key health, safety and welfare considerations associated with installation and operation.

4. Differentiate small plug-in solar systems from conventional rooftop PV, whole-home distributed energy systems, and larger microgrids, and identify how permitting, professional involvement, utility interconnection, and regulatory requirements change as system scale increases.
