Event Description

The energy code can feel confusing and complicated, and even more so for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) as a relatively new legal building type with multiple form factors and varying requirements. In particular, questions about how to apply the rules for solar, QII and hot water heating abound. Our instructor will help clarify the intent of the Energy Code and its applicability to ADUs. This 2-hour session is for builders, architects, designers, homeowners and anyone else who is thinking about, or in the process of building an ADU in California, and wants practical, clear guidance.

This session will cover:

  • An introduction to the basics of the current 2019 Title 24, Section 6 energy code
  • Definitions and clarifications of ADU types and which code applies
  • Identify relevant regulatory authorities for different ADU types
  • Best practices for modeling ADU’s estimated energy use
  • Plan check and inspection process tips and requirements and how they vary, along with how requirements have changed related to whole-building ventilation for ADUs, envelope requirements, and more.
