Free PG&E Webinar: Window Selection for New and Existing Homes, May 11 9-11 am PT
Event Description
Window technologies have changed considerably in recent years. These products can save up to 25% on heating costs and up to 40% on cooling costs but using the wrong window technology in the wrong climate can increase energy costs. Sorting out all the options and variables can be very confusing. Windows are also a critical component of Passive House performance and this class will explain Passive House windows and the performance differences.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

2. Energy losses and gains in homes through the window assembly.
3. New Vacuum insulated glass technology with R-values of 14 and SHGC of .18.
4. The impact high-performance windows can have on comfort.
5. Terms, definitions, and window labeling such as U and R values, solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC) shading coefficient (SC), visible light transmission (VLT), and the NFRC label, etc.
6. How do low-e and multiple or spectrally selective low-e coatings work -- what products work best in cold, warm, and combination climates?
7. Explain how low conductivity frames can reduce energy loss by reducing condensation and related mold/mildew problems.
8. Understanding “warm edge spacer technologies”.
9. An explanation of short and long-wave radiation, the electromagnetic spectrum, and its impact on building design/window design and fading.
10. Window air spaces and gases -- the relationship between air space, the value of gasses, and the R-value.
