Green Night
Event Description

Light pollution is unwanted and excessive light at night produced by poorly designed streetlights, porch lights, patio lights, parking lot lights, stadium lights, any light at night. Light pollution – especially the blue light produced by new LED lights now popping up worldwide – is linked to serious human health problems: elevated rates of breast cancer, prostate cancer, diabetes, obesity, and disruption of sleep cycles. Light pollution is bad for wildlife: birds, mammals, insects, and amphibians all need darkness at night to thrive, and some species are facing extinction due to loss of their naturally dark night-time environment.

During our June Green Night, James Lowenthal, Professor of Astronomy at Smith College, will describe how easy it is to fix light pollution: it all begins with good design. We CAN have it all: visibility and safety at night AND a healthy, natural nighttime environment that is beneficial for the health of humans and wildlife.
