Intermediate Lighting - Mod 3: Daylighting
Event Description

This 10-session course covers a range of intermediate level lighting topics for optimizing energy efficiency while maintaining quality in lighting. It is held on 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm and can be taken as a complete series or individually. It is intended as a follow-up to the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Fundamentals of Lighting course (offered each fall), or to another lighting fundamentals class where lighting topics and terms have been covered. Each week, the 2 to 3 hour class topic is taught by an expert in that area. This class earns 20 CEUs as a series (or 20 AIA LUs for registered architects/members of AIA) or 2.0 per individual class.

This series content includes:

  • How to upgrade lighting systems for better lighting and energy savings in commercial buildings
  • Incorporating sustainable practices and benefitting from daylighting in your design
  • Understanding electrical components
  • Specifying products and layouts to ensure long-term financial benefits and effective light levels and features
  • Creating code-compliant solutions
  • Making use of lighting controls and commissioning for energy savings and intended functionality

 

Course agenda:

  • Introduction and safety message
  • Overview of daylighting in buildings
  • Design guidelines for optimizing daylighting and avoiding glare
  • Metrics and overview of software to measure effectiveness of various options

 

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate various options for daylighting to achieve specific results
  • Describe tools for measuring effectiveness of daylighting strategies
  • Define glare and suggest ways to mitigate glare in buildings
  • Assess the major benefits of a daylighting strategy including on occupant health and productivity
