Intermediate Lighting
Event Description

This 10-session course covers a range of intermediate-level lighting topics for optimizing energy efficiency while maintaining quality in lighting. It is held on 10 consecutive Wednesday evenings from 5:30 pm - 8:30 pm and can be taken as a series or individually. It is intended as a follow-up to the Illuminating Engineering Society (IES) Fundamentals of Lighting course (offered each fall), or to another lighting fundamentals class where lighting topics and terms have been covered. Each week, the 2 to 3-hour class topic is taught by an expert in that area. This class earns 20 CEUs (or 20 AIA LUs for registered architects/members of AIA) as a series or 2 LUs per individual class.

The series content includes:

  • How to upgrade lighting systems for better lighting and energy savings in commercial buildings
  • Incorporating sustainable practices and benefitting from daylighting in your design
  • Understanding electrical components
  • Specifying products and layouts to ensure long-term financial benefits and effective light levels and features
  • Creating code-compliant solutions
  • Making use of lighting controls and commissioning for energy savings and intended functionality

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Measure current lighting conditions for a space
  • Analyze equipment alternatives and strategies making use of IES LEM-3
  • Compare energy-saving lighting upgrades for particular applications
  • Propose lighting system changes so lighting is improved using less energy
