Every organization and everyone can submit to Rate It Green's green building calendar! Simply click register, verify your email address, and create a username and password. You can then decide if you'd like to engage more fully as a community member, but you'll be able to post events.

We welcome praise and advice and even criticism but all posted content and ratings should be constructive in nature. For guidance on what constitutes suitable content on the Rate It Green site, please refer to the User Agreement and Site Rules.

Health In the Built Environment: Native & Sustainable Landscapes, Online, March 7, 9-10:30 am ET
Event Description
While the concept itself is not a new one, Doug Tallamy’s book Nature’s Best Hope released in 2020, influenced gardeners all over the US to use their yards to create what he calls a Homegrown National Park. Where native gardens and “soft landings” or groundcovers under trees are grown in order to support native wildlife and create healthier landscapes for humans.
Native landscaping and lawn alternatives offer many benefits to both property owners and the surrounding ecology including reduced maintenance once groundcover has been established, increased air & water quality and increased biodiversity, as well as a more entertaining and enjoyable yard.
No matter the motivator behind pursuing an alternative to monoculture or turf, Green Building Alliance invites you to join us on Zoom to attend the latest installment of the Health in the Built Environment series, where landscape experts Suzanne Pace and Juliette Olshock will share the potential benefits and drawbacks of native and sustainable landscapes in the built environment including the effects on environmental and human health, share case-studies of successful options and techniques in our area, and answer any underlying questions the group may have about sustainable landscapes.
Juliette studied sustainable agriculture and permaculture design at Slippery Rock University. She has worked with several experts, teaching courses on edible forests and permaculture design, as well as sustainability lab at Chatham Univeristy. Currently, Juliette instructs and intensive sustainable landscapes training at Phipps modeled after the NOFA Organic Lawn Care Program.
Suzanne Pace, Stone | Grow
Suzanne, founder of Stone | Grow, practices organic, chemical free, sustainable hardscaping and landscaping. Stone | Grow is a NOFA certified landcare company through their partners at Phipps, and Suzanne is currently the only woman in the Pittsburgh area with a specialized Dry Stone Walling Association certification.
