Free Webinar: Drought to Deluge: A Rain Garden in Action, June 15,
Event Description

The Southeast Community Center in the Bayview neighborhood of San Francisco integrates stormwater management best practices as part of a San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) community facility. The significant rain gardens not only integrate site and roof water but act as a playful natural area for local youth that has limited access to nature. Boulders, logs, and native and adapted plantings create adventurous landscapes for discovery. The site has performed well under the pressure of recent rain events and has inspired many to reconsider how landscapes for extreme rain, as well as drought, are worth integrating into our changing climate.

The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:

  • Evaluate stormwater management options for integrated, public-facing, open-space projects
  • Recognize rain garden design strategies and materials that function well during heavy storm conditions
  • Encourage a connection to nature in an urban setting as part of a rain garden design solution
  • Leverage the shared stormwater management and rain garden design strategies in projects of varying scales and site conditions
