Free Webinar: Balanced Ventilation for Better Health, Comfort, and Electrification (2 Part Series), March 26 - April 2, 9 am - 1 pm PT
Event Description

Balanced Ventilation for Better Health, Comfort, and Electrification is a two-part series that will help prepare designers, installers and commissioning agents to take advantage of balanced ventilation systems in high-performance electrification projects. This series covers the health benefits of ventilation and filtration, as well as equipment types, installation strategies, ducting best practices, and ducting issues.

March 26, Session 1:

More buildings are being constructed with high-performance building envelopes. For these buildings, a well-designed and installed ventilation system is a must. Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance delves into why ventilation and filtration are so important. Dan will look at indoor and outdoor air quality and discuss the effectiveness of ventilation and filtration at managing various pollutants. In addition to the large existing body of evidence supporting the need for ventilation and filtration in residential buildings, this session will consider the current impacts of building electrification, the pandemic, and wildfires on our systems.

Session 1 is designed to help participants identify and understand critical issues relating to healthy buildings. The class will help participants improve their ability to discuss these issues with customers and will also lay the groundwork for the other course in the Balanced Ventilation series about the design and installation of balanced ventilation and filtration systems.

Session 1 Agenda:

  • Residential indoor air quality in existing California homes
  • Residential ventilation systems in existing California homes
  • Residential filtration systems in existing California homes
  • Building pressures and pollutant concentrations
  • Diagnostics: testing ventilation systems, building enclosure tightness and pollutant monitoring
  • Building loads and heat recovery
  • Evaluating filtration options: cost, energy consumption, system efficiency
  • Ideal work scopes - identify critical details to include so that our systems work together providing comfort and air quality
  • Talking to customers - identify the things that will help them make choose a healthier home

April 2, Session 2:

For high performance buildings, a well designed and installed air quality system is a must. In this class we will look at performance based design and installation practices that lead to effective ventilation and filtration systems. Examples of completed, high efficiency systems are presented to show how they were built and commissioned, with instructor Dan Perunko of Balance Point Home Performance sharing lessons learned so others can avoid repeating them.

Session 2 Agenda:

  • Equipment selection criteria: energy recovery ventilator (ERV) or heat recovery ventilator (HRV)
  • Heat recovery cores and their efficiencies
  • Fan motor types
  • Fan motor power and install issues that increase power consumption
  • Integrated with HVAC vs stand alone systems
  • Control strategies
  • Locating the system to maximize performance
  • Proper ducting for ventilation systems
  • Duct materials – where to use metal
  • How to size ducts for low static systems
  • Duct layout options
  • Outside Intake and exhaust grills
  • Ember and smoke intrusion
  • Room intake and exhaust grills
  • Grill sizing and sound
  • Filters, how many, how big and where do we need them
  • Low energy, high efficacy, recirculating air filter
  • Commissioning balanced ventilation systems
  • Measuring system energy performance
  • Measuring effective heat recovery

    • Dan Perunko

Dan Perunko is cofounder of Balance Point Home Performance Company. In 2006, along with Gavin Healy, Dan started a successful company providing full service home performance analysis, retrofits, consultations, and trainings. Dan works on new and existing construction designs and hands on installations of enclosures, mechanical, plumbing, and indoor air quality components based on tested performance outcomes. Dan especially enjoys improving existing homes to provide homeowners with levels of comfort and energy consumption that they have not believed possible. Dan is a professional trainer who designs and delivers full and multi day courses for California’s Utility Companies (energy training centers) and ACI national and regional conferences. Dan brings his experience from construction, design and building analysis, to make his class materials relevant, useful and understandable regardless of the attendees’ level of experience.
