Free PG&E Webinar: Residential Lighting Controls, May 5, 9am-12pm
Event Description
This class introduces designers, specifiers, building contractors, and homeowners to residential lighting controls – how they function, code requirements and types of products to consider. Award-winning lighting designer David W Patton and lighting expert Clifton Lemon will discuss options to design lighting controls to meet mandatory controls requirements as well as meet a homeowner’s personal preferences. They will explain how to go beyond what the code demands to achieve further savings and to automate the control of the lighting. They tackle one of the biggest issues in a lighting system - controls and lighting fixture compatibility - by explaining how to think about controls early so fixtures and controls work together smoothly. This class concentrates on residential lighting controls.
The objective of this course is that at the conclusion, participants will be able to:
- Find resources on how to meet basic energy code requirements for residential lighting controls
- Explain compatibility issues between lighting fixtures and controls
- Identify what to look for to avoid costly lighting product incompatibilities and wiring surprises
- Model lighting controls specifications for residences
Overview – Lighting controls for automated switching and dimming
- Occupancy
- Task tuning
- Timers
Cases where controls are useful
- Auto lights on – sensing someone outside for security
- Auto lights off for exterior lights during daylight hours
- All lights (or select lights) OFF – manually with single switch at end of day
- Scene-setting in key rooms – such as a variety of scenes in Dining Room, in Kitchen, in Conference Room, in AV or TV room

- More complex solutions and devices for more complexity and sophistication
Compatibility with light sources and driver types (dimming)
Typical wiring with various dimming protocols (residential level)
David Wilds Patton is a Bay Area residential lighting designer who has enjoyed painting clients' homes with light for over 30 years. With a construction background that evolved into a lighting design practice, his artistry has been grounded in a deep practical knowledge of lighting technology and lighting controls while always trying to create emotionally welcoming spaces.
Clifton Stanley Lemon, IES
Clifton is CEO of Clifton Lemon Associates, a consultancy providing strategy, marketing, and education services to the lighting and energy industries. He is also Business Development Director for the California Energy Alliance and Co-Chair of Strategies in Light. He was formerly Marketing Communications Manager for Soraa; Director of Business Development at Integral Group; and founder and CEO of BrandSequence.
