Event Description

Buildings have one of the highest carbon footprints—they currently contribute to 30% of global annual greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and consume around 40% of the world’s energy. The construction, maintenance and ongoing energy consumption of commercial buildings make up the majority of the real estate sector’s overall carbon emissions profile. As the saying goes, it’s not the supermarket bag that’s the problem, it’s the supermarket building. Over the past decade, the real estate industry has taken substantial strides toward reducing carbon emissions and energy consumption—while increasing asset value in many cases.

We’ve made great progress, but there is more work to be done. Ultimately, we must reach “net zero” emissions, meaning that industry must remove as much carbon as it emits each year. This will take aggressive approaches, new technology and innovative public policy. It is an ambitious, even audacious, goal, but it’s the moonshot of our time—and it’s achievable.

This session is both a learning experience and a call to action for businesses and rate payers alike. Zero is the new Black, and Carbon Neutrality is the Future. It’s time to get to work.

This class is offered in partnership with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E).
