Event Description

Dive into the opportunities of healthcare-focused buildings to reduce emissions and waste, improving their ability to serve the communities in which they are located with the USGBC Virginia community.

Given the complex challenge of environmental health inequity in the U.S., healthcare building designers and operators must consider the impacts on the cities and towns in which they operate. Many of these areas are already experiencing a disproportionate number of negative health impacts from both climate change and from the facilities themselves causing increased particulate matter, light pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, waste, and noise in the vicinity.

Green building rating systems can help guide design and operation decisions that will improve the climate and health impacts of healthcare facilities. Under the LEED BD+C v4/v4.1 rating systems, healthcare systems have unique credits available to them, including Integrative Project Planning and Design; Places of Respite; Direct Exterior Access; PBT Source Reduction for Mercury and Lead, Cadmium, and Copper; Furniture and Medical Furnishings; and Designing for Flexibility. Under WELL v2, there are opportunities to focus on accessibility and impacts on the community, including V05 - Site Planning and Selection, C11 - Civic Engagement, and I06 - Carbon Disclosure and Reduction. Join the panel as they delve into how LEED and WELL can further the efforts of healthcare facilities to improve the health of the communities in which they reside.

This expert panel of Green Building professionals and allied community stakeholders will discuss the connection between environmental health inequity, sustainability practices, and healthcare delivery, providing inspiring examples of how we can prioritize both building/landscaping requirements and the needs of those living in the region. Don't miss this opportunity to gain insights, share ideas, and collaborate on imagining a healthcare system that contributes to a healthier, more resilient future for Virginia and beyond.
