  • 05 Aug 2016
Event Description

Come see Hampshire College's two new Living Building Challenge centers up and running.
Friday, August 5th - 1-5 pm

Hampshire College Campus
893 West Street,
Amherst MA, 01002

With construction now complete, Hampshire College's two Living Building Challenge (LBC) certified centers are fully functional!

In fall of 2015, BuildingEnergy Pro Tour participants toured two under-construction centers on the Hampshire College campus that were designed to meet the rigorous standards of the Living Building Challenge (LBC). With construction on these two buildings recently completed, the August 2016 ProTour will be a chance for participants to see the finished products, after occupation and with systems up and running.

The tour will include walk-through of both sites, as well an overview of the LBC certification process, and a Q & A with members of the team that made these projects a reality. Because there are currently only eight certified LBC projects in the world, this tour provides a rare opportunity to hear from people working to the meet the LBC criteria.

To meet the exacting Living Building Challenge requirements, both buildings employ exceptional energy conservation and on-site renewable generation for all heating, cooling and electricity needs. The buildings are a part of Hampshire College's overall plan to make campus operations carbon neutral by 2020.

Site 1 – Hitchcock Center for the Environment
This new 9,000 square-foot building will be New England's first public environmental education center to meet the LBC (version 2.1).

Site 2 - R.W. Kern Center
The 17,000 square-foot R.W. Kern Center will be a multifunctional learning, teaching, and exhibition space; the point of entry for prospective students and their families into the Hampshire community; and the location of the admissions financial aid and new student programs offices.
