Event Description
Materials Summit: Finding connections in holistic sustainability through embodied carbon and human health
Each year Green Building United hosts a day-long summit focused on health and wellness in the built environment. This year we are expanding beyond human wellbeing to incorporate environmental health as it relates to embodied carbon.
The Summit will include inspiring presentations and a call for collaboration from both Materials Carbon Action Network (MaterialsCAN) and the mindful MATERIALS Manufacturer Group (mM Manufacturer Group), and is geared toward anyone interested in knowing more about the role materials play in creating healthier, greener buildings. Lunch will be enjoyed in the beautiful Knoll Showroom, and the full-day of rich learning will conclude with a happy hour!
Event is worth 6 GBCI CE hours and 6 AIA LU-HSWs.
Embodied carbon emissions currently account for 11 percent of annual global greenhouse gas emissions, making the materials we use to build a crucial, but often unseen, contributor to the climate crisis. But what if the buildings we designed and occupied could instead serve to reverse this trend by acting as carbon sinks?
This morning session will convene the Materials Carbon Action Network - including Interface, Skanska, Gensler, Saint-Gobain, USG, Armstrong Ceilings, Superior Essex Communications, and Kingspan - who have come together to lead the global conversation on embodied carbon to accelerate collaboration and change towards a future with carbon-negative materials in the built environment.
Afternoon Presentation by mM Manufacturer Group
Every architect, designer and contractor looking for healthy, sustainable materials knows how challenging it can be. Similarly, industry is evolving to meet demands for both better materials and increased transparency expectations for the disclosure of material and ingredient information in products.
This afternoon session will introduce attendees to how the mindful Materials database is driving industry transformation by providing tools for A&D and supporting the improvements made to the BPDO credits in LEED Beta v4.1. Learn how the mindful Materials platform is building a community between architects, designers, contractors, manufacturers and owners so that we can all design with intent for the health of our people and our planet.
