Event Description

The Architecture Beyond Convention Symposium 2019: Presented by Sustainable and The Ryerson University Master of Architecture Class of 2020

The event will feature a set of key speakers discussing contemporary architectural and other industry issues in the context of advancing architecture beyond convention. A cocktail hour allows for time to network with industry professionals and other like-minded architecture students. Bar reopens at the end of the event.

ABC Summary:
Questions regarding conventions are at the core of the architectural discipline. Both the practice of architecture and its internal discourse operate within a framework established by these conventions, branching from methods of representation to construction and contractual structures.

Architecture Beyond Convention confronts limitations within this conventional framework in order to explore alternate paths that are expressive and innovative in their approaches and outcomes. It attempts to address the integration of different specialties within the discipline and encourages those trained in architecture to explore varied subjects, ultimately folding these experiences back into the discipline.

The symposium invites individuals with unique visions to discuss their objectives, methodologies, and challenges, and to speculate on how the evolving frameworks for education, licensure, and practice can better respond to the complexities of contemporary society, enabling in architecture the capacity to act as an avant-garde discipline.
