Check out Matt Hoots’ interview with Ken Nelson from Panasonic Eco Solutions at the International Builders Show/Kitchen & Bathroom Show.  In this video, Ken gives an introduction to the Whisper Green Select line of fans, and he also shares a bit about fans and moisture generally.  What makes a quiet fan?  How quiet is quiet anyway? What might consumers and builders want to know?

Today’s tighter building envelopes can mean more moisture and therefore more condensation.  To prevent or mitigation moisture related issues, Panasonic has added condensation sensors to the Whisper Quiet line.

The Whisper Green Select fans provide continuous ventilation, and offer a module that will automatically trigger when it detects moisture or a combination of temperature and moisture combination that causes condemnation potential.

Whisper Value fans offer an integrated condensation control and automate trigger as well, with slightly small wings and a smaller footprint.

What might trigger the sensors?

  • Showers/hot water
  • Laundry
  • Kitchen range hood

Ken’s rule of thumb which we think is worth sharing: "A fan has no value if not turned on." That may sound obvious, but how many of us have lamented as homeowners or property managers when someone refuses once, or repeatedly, and maybe even for years, to make use of the fan.  Sensors do sound like a sensible solution for when we forget or for those who don’t think to turn the fan on when needed.   Homeowners might prefer control, and then the sensors can override when needed.  In some properties, it might make sense to provide only the sensors and not separate controls, so the property will be automatically protected.

Ken shares his recommendations on ideal fan placement in a home, and we are sure he would welcome your comments and discussion!

This interview was at the 2020 International Builders Show in Vegas. Since that time and studying 40 different fan types, we make the decision to make this fan out standard due to its versatility. Lots of plug in options + you can control the CFM with the flip of an internal switch. We used to have to guess on the CFM and get a single speed fan in the past and this model takes out the guesswork.
