The #1920sMakeoverATL Project is in full gear now (!), and foundation work has started! Matt and the ATL team have decided to prop up the house on piers and completely rebuild the foundation. The original foundation was just in poor shape, and it had three different levels (or more, depending on how one is counting).

The basement will now be one level with a small step, which will make it be easier to control moisture and radon, and easier to frame and finish.  This plan will also live better and won't feel like much of a basement - with 9+ foot ceilings, newly even floor space, and lots of light coming through the full basement to the back.  It's important to take advantage of any extra space a team can get on these tight lots, in the Atlanta market, and beyond.  Matt also reminds us how they're taking care of the trees, also important on these lots, and for quite a few reasons.

Matt also shares that it looks like Margaret Mitchell of Gone with the Wind Fame lived in the #1920sATLMakover Deep Energy Retrofit in Ansley park, Atlanta - Matt’s going to keep researching, but we do know that her brother owned the house. Check out Matt’s photo from 1952!

You may recall that when Matt did a blower door test with Corbett Lundsford, Corbett said this was the leakiest house in Atlanta, and maybe one of the leakiest houses he’s ever tested!  So… maybe Margaret was talking about her drafty house?!!
