Coming to East 27th Street in the Kips Bay section of Manhattan is prefabricated micro apartments. The housing model won the adAPT NYC Competition for its innovative design that is both eco-friendly and extremely space conscious. The new building will be geared more towards the city's growing population of smaller households and will help provide housing for veterans and others with a lower income. Despite the lower budget goals, the building will still have amenities such as a rooftop garden, cafe, gym, and bike storage. The building will be called Carmel Place and will be among New York City's first buildings to be composed completely of prefabricated micro apartments. http://inhabitat.com/nyc/nycs-first-prefab-micro-unit-apartment-building-begins-to-rise-in-manhattan-photos/ Manhattan has been facing space problems as more and more people desire to live within the city but less and less apartments are available. I am a junior at Boston University majoring in Environmental Analysis and Policy. I am in the dual degree program and will also be receiving an MA in Energy and Environment upon graduation. I would like to learn more about the green building industry, especially in the New York metropolitan area.
