Calling all residents of Syracuse, NY! Thanks to a generous grant through the Save the Rain Program, every homeowner in the City of Syracuse is entitled to a free Rain Barrel. A rain barrel is, as the EPA puts it, a system that collects and stores rainwater from your roof that would otherwise be lost to runoff and diverted to storm drains and streams. Rain barrels collect what is known as "soft water", meaning it has low amounts of calcium carbonate and other ions, which can be used in times of drought for watering plants and flowers, or washing windows and cars. In the summer, when water demand is at its highest, having a rain barrel can reduce water cost by lowering demand and strain on the clean water system. This means as a homeowner you get a consistent supply of clean, fresh water for outdoor use, FREE. For those in the NYC area, you can read about the NYC Environmental Protection's Rain Barrel Giveaway Program. The website also gives a lot of good information such as winterization of your rain barrel and more for others to use. Visit: http://www.nyc.gov/html/dep/html/stormwater/rainbarrel.shtml

I am a junior at Boston University majoring in Environmental Analysis and Policy. I am in the dual degree program and will also be receiving an MA in Energy and Environment upon graduation. I would like to learn more about the green building industry, especially in the New York metropolitan area.
