Recycling Organic Waste in NYC

Almost one third of waste that the NYC Department of Sanitation collects is organic waste (Food scraps, spoiled food, food-soiled paper, plants, etc.) Rather than throwing it away as garage, NYC wants to separate it for composting. This will enrich the environment rather than damaging it with the greenhouse gas emissions that are released as the organic waste decomposes. Brown bins for organic waste are beginning to appear all over the city as a part of the city’s campaign to better the environment through reduced greenhouse gas emissions and less dependence on landfills. Former Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg’s administration began this campaign in 2013 as an essential part of the city’s sustainability goals, which has now been continued by Mayor bill de Blasio. The project is undergoing an expansion that could significantly change how all New Yorkers manage organic materials, which has never been seen on this scale in the United States. By the end of next year, officials say, all city residents will have a way to recycle their organic waste!
