MIT announces new 5-year plan to address problem of climate change
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology will not stop investments in fossil fuel companies, going against students, faculty, and activists. University President L. Rafael Reif explains in a call with reporters that maintaining relationships with oil and energy companies is more affective in tackling climate change.
However, on October 21st the university announced a five-year plan to combat climate change. The plan will include increased research and education about climate change as well as the solutions to fixing and adapting to it. The plan will accelerate low-carbon energy technology by adding eight new research centers along with new tools for sharing information about climate change across the globe. The plan will also add new measures to reduce the amount of carbon use on campus.
The plan embodies the fundamental agreement that climate change is a serious problem. MIT has not only the capability, but also the responsibility, to lead the fight against climate change.
However, this is a global problem, and will take deep societal change. Everyone needs to do their part. Every nation, sector, institution, firm, and individual has a role to play in addressing this problem. Let’s fight climate change together.
