Greenovate Boston is the Mayor’s initiative to engage all Bostonians in the City’s climate action goals, while continuing to make Boston a thriving, healthy and innovative city. Our team works with the community to define and implement the City’s Climate Action Plan. Boston’s Climate Action Plan serves as our roadmap to reduce our carbon emissions and to prepare for the impacts of climate change. As a leading city on climate action, Boston is committed to reduce its carbon emissions 25 percent by 2020 and to be carbon neutral by 2050. As a coastal city, vulnerable to rising sea levels and extreme weather events, we’re also committed to building a city that is resilient to climate change.

Reporting to the Director of Communications and Community Engagement,
the Greenovate Boston Communications Manager leads the development and implementation of communications strategies to drive climate action in Boston in line with the City’s Climate Action Plan. The Manager is responsible for overseeing the marketing plans to increase awareness and access to Renew Boston, the City’s residential energy efficiency program that connects Boston residents to Mass Save.

In addition to energy efficiency, the Greenovate Boston Communications Manager leads the development and measurement of multiple environmental behavior-change campaigns and create a toolkit for residential climate action in Boston.

The ideal candidate providea leadership and expertise in developing a strong content strategy that carries our message effectively across a broad and diverse audience. The right candidate establishes creative and innovative strategies to strengthen the Greenovate Boston brand and expand to new audiences. The position also is responsible for overseeing marketing plans that increase awareness of new and existing city services related to the Environment Department.

Responsibilities:

-The Greenovate Boston Communications Manager responsibilities include:
-Develops and implements marketing plans to increase awareness and access to Renew Boston, the City’s residential energy efficiency program that connects Boston residents to Mass Save.
-Creates and executes environmental behavior-change campaigns to drive climate action in line with the City’s Climate Action Plan. Builds a toolkit of resources for residential climate action in Boston.
-Identifies and elevates the stories of Boston residents, organizations and businesses that lead on local climate action in the annual Greenovate Boston awards program.
-Identifies and tests new strategies and innovative approaches to strengthen the Greenovate Boston brand and expand to new audiences.
-Establishes a metrics-driven evaluation process to create an iterative content strategy and track progress towards our goals.
-Manages all Greenovate Boston communications channels. Supports the engagement strategies of initiatives and projects that support the City’s Climate Action Plan, including Carbon Free Boston and Climate Ready Boston.
-Works closely with colleagues in the City’s Environment Department and throughout other City departments and agencies to coordinate on messaging and identify opportunities for cross-promotion.
-Writes and copy-edits Environment Department press materials, such as press releases, op-eds, etc.
-Assists with in-person community outreach efforts.
-Assists with event planning and logistics.
-Performs related work as required.

Minimum Entrance Qualifications:

-At least three (3) years of fulltime, or equivalent part-time, experience in communications, marketing, journalism, media relations, and/or digital strategy.
-A bachelor’s degree is highly preferred n communications, marketing, journalism, or related field may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
-Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to write for diverse audiences.
