Zilllow, a leading online real estate database company has recently been helping owners understand the benefits and potential of having solar panels on their home. A new Zillow analysis study demonstrated that homes with solar-energy systems sold for 4.1% more on average than others nationwide within the past year.

During Earth Day this past April, Zillow put a Sun Number on more than 84 million homes across the United States in order to highlight the importance of solar potential. The Sun Number measures the roof of each home by calculating pitch, orientation, and size of each roof plane within a household. It gets computed within a 0-100 range, and the higher the score the more suitable solar energy can be installed on the house.

The Sun Number provides a starting point for possible energy savings, which is not only good for the environment, but can lower the cost of a households energy bill.  Overall, having the Sun Number on houses that Zillow displays on their website increases the public’s awareness on solar power and the need to become more environmentally friendly. The second image above is an example of what a consumer may see on the Zillow Website, showing the Sun Number.

That is good news. Hopefully the trend stays true so clients see the value on investing in their homes.
