Request of money donations are automatically considered as illegitimate, no record will be provided if the said organization did received the money and on your part you will not have a record for tax purposes. It is not advisable to make donations. It will be hard to be rational during a time of calamity but take time to think about things because more often than not being impulsive will worsen things. http://crowncapitalmngt.com/blogpdf/Fraudsters_attack_even_natural_disasters_victims.pdf

While I understand that it can be upsetting that fraud exists, especially in such a great time of need, I also share a great deal of optimism that so many people are willing to give and are helping each other. I agree with your article's mention of supporting known and reputable organizations, but there is just so much we can do from little things to big donations. Even giving your outgrown or extra winter coat can really help someone. Here is a blog where you can read about 6 Ways to help Hurricane Sandy victims: http://inhabitat.com/six-things-you-can-do-to-help-hurricane-sandy-victims/american-red-cross/?extend=1. Ideas do include financial donations, but also giving time, blankets, and food.
