North Lombok - Rebuilding with Dome Houses

On August 5th, a devastating 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck in North Lombok Indonesia, destroying over 50,00 homes and displacing over 350,000 people. Rate It Green Members DOME Lombok - Eco Village were safe in South Lombok, but the company has jumped into recovery efforts with passion. They and others are racing to provide as much shelter as possible before the rainy season hits in another month or so. Due to the destruction and partly also out of fear of aftershocks and additional earthquakes, residents are largely living in tents which will not provide sufficient shelter in the heavy monsoon rains. The DOME Lombok team is working to build some dome housing and are teaching residents how to build, as well as providing the materials needed to rebuild. Dome housing is one of the most earthquake resistant forms of housing and can be built for approximately 500 US dollars. Dome features include:

• Strong structure - highly earthquake, flood and fire resistant
• Quick to build – a team of 5-10 workers can complete the basic structure within 2 weeks
• Communities can learn how to build their own homes
• Materials needed are easy to source and are not expensive

About DOME Lombok:

Dome Lombok is an Eco Resort in South Lombok, consisting of 9 Domes built according to a special earth-bag building technique. Dome Lombok is dedicated to finding sustainable building solutions without compromising on design, quality and comfort. Each Dome is built with compacted earth, sand and gravel - materials that are organic, low-impact to the environment, and exist in abundance. The shape makes the domes durable and extremely resistant to earthquake, fires and floods. The Domes are finished with natural lime stone plaster. The resort also features solar power, rainwater collection and water recycling systems. Top resort goals include lowering the impact of development on the environment and building a community with homes that help facilitate the human need to connect with each other, ourselves, and nature. The company also hopes to popularize the dome building method and to promote Eco Tourism around the globe.
