California Passes Legislation to Procure 50% Renewable Energy by 2030
On September 11, the California legislature made history by passing SB 350, a plan to to procure at least 50 percent of the state's electricity from renewable energy sources, including wind and solar, by 2030. Governor Jerry Brown is expected to sign the bill into law this month. California already has in place a Renewable Portfolio Standard Program (RPS) with a goal of 33% renewable energy by 2020. The RPS also aims to achieve an 80% greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
California's energy efforts continue to help reduce emissions and pollution, make energy pricing more competitive, and provide a leadership example for other governing bodies (even if the provision to decrease vehicle petroleum also by 50% was dropped).
