SCS Indoor Advantage
Categories: Product Certifications
Description: In 2004, SCS began its indoor air quality performance initiative, and has since certified hundreds of products. Indoor Advantage™ and Indoor Advantage™ Gold certifications both conform to the requirements of the SCS EC-10.2-2007 Indoor Air Quality Standard, publicly available on the SCS website in the Indoor Air Quality Standards and References Section. The VOC criteria for the Indoor Advantage certification are based on emission criteria established in the Business and Institutional Furniture Manufacturer’s Association (BIFMA) Standard for Low-Emitting Office Furniture Systems and Seating (ANSI/BIFMA X7.1) and the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design criteria EQ4.5 (furniture and seating). SCS Indoor Advantage certification may be used to inspire confidence in architects, consumers, manufacturers, regulators, suppliers and more that your certified products consistently meet rigorous indoor air quality emissions requirements.
Environmental Characteristics: Scientific Certification Systems created its first indoor air quality standard, SCS-EC10, in 2004. The EC10 standard closely adhered to the requirements of the California Collaborative of High Performance Schools (CHPS) and to California Special Environmental Requirements Specification 01350. Many of the requirements of the International Organization of Standards (ISO) 9001-2000 Quality Management Systems for Process and Quality Control were also incorporated into the EC-10 Standard.

level™ – Multi-Attribute Certification for Furniture
SCS is again at the forefront of sustainability certification providing the first-ever multi-stakeholder, multi-attribute sustainability certification for office and institutional furniture. level™ certification, based on the BIFMA e3-2008 sustainability standard, sets furniture manufacturers on a path toward greater sustainability over time. Based on environmental and social criteria set forth in the standard, a product’s entire supply chain is assessed. Certification assessment includes an evaluation of specific corporate policies and guidelines and an assessment of associated company manufacturing facilities. Products must meet quantifiable milestones of environmental and social performance at every step of development.
FloorScore, developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI) in conjunction with Scientific Certification Systems (SCS), tests and certifies hard surface flooring and flooring adhesive products for compliance with rigorous indoor air quality emissions requirements. Individual volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are evaluated using health-based specifications. Flooring and adhesives that earn FloorScore certification earn a legitimately enhanced market position, distinguished by the FloorScore Certification Mark. FloorScore is recognized by the US Green Building Council and conforms to LEED criteria EQ 4.3 and criteria for the Collaborative for High Performance Schools (CHPS) and California 01350 Special Environmental Requirements.

Indoor Advantage™ and Indoor Advantage™ Gold certifications both conform to the requirements of the SCS EC-10.2-2007 Indoor Air Quality Standard, publicly available on the SCS website in the Indoor Air Quality Standards and References Section. The program uses procedures, developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, that have been subject to extensive peer review and public comment. To date, this program has developed Chronic Reference Exposure Levels (CRELs) for 80 chemical substances, a number of which may be emitted by building products. SCS Indoor Advantage™ Gold certifications may be used to inspire confidence in architects, consumers, manufacturers, regulators, suppliers and more that your certified products consistently meet rigorous indoor air quality emissions requirements.
